Angel Blue, Soprano

As a past winner of a Pasadena Area Opera Trust award in 2008, soprano Angel Blue, who is enjoying a top level international career, is graciously giving an Encouragement Award at this year’s competition.

Angel Blue made her Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season singing Violetta Valéry (La traviata).

She was raised in Apple Valley, California and began her musical instruction with piano at age 7. Angel is a graduate of the distinguished Los Angeles County High school for the Arts. A former Miss Hollywood and 1st runner up to Miss California, Blue holds a Masters of Music degree in Opera Performance from the University of California, Los Angeles. She attended the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute in 2007, She won the Zarzuela Prize and Second Prize in Operalia (2009) and from 2009-2011 she was a member of the Centre de Perfeccionament Plácido Domingo at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia, Spain.

Her most recent engagements have been Mimi with the Wiener Staatsoper, Semperoper Dresden, and the Metropolitan Opera, and Musetta at Teatro alla Scala.

Ms. Blue’s repertoire includes Marguerite (Faust), Tosca (Tosca), Countess Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro) Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Liu (Turandot), Luisa Miller (Luisa Miller), Leonora (Il Trovatore) Bess (Porgy and Bess) Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica), Giuliettta and Antonia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) . Her concert repertory includes Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder, Mahler’s Symphony no.2, Peri in Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri, Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven’s 9 Symphony, Arthur Honeggar’s Kind David, and Vaughn William’s Sea Symphony. Blue has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Munich Philharmonic and Israeli Philharmonic, Australian Symphony Orchestra, and for La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Vienna State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Frankfurt Opera, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Theater an der Wien, Seattle Opera and San Francisco Opera, Astana Opera. She has also sung at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Bregenz Festival, Seoul Arts Center Festival and Edinburgh International Festival and in 2016 opened the Summer Recital Series in New York’s Central Park.

Blue is the CEO of the non profit organisation Sylvia’s Kids, a foundation dedicated to helping America’s teenagers continue their studies in either a trade school, community college, or four year university once they have completed high school. The Sylvia’s Kids Foundation enriches the lives of inner city youth by providing monetary scholarships each year to graduating high school seniors who will continue their studies.
